Family Devotions (Domestic Church)
WHAT IS THE DOMESTIC CHURCH?
Pope St. John Paul II explained, “The Fathers of the Church, in the Christian tradition, have spoken of the family as a 'domestic church, a 'little church'."
Indeed, the domestic church is the very first place children experience the faith and the love of God. Our personal encounter with Christ begins in our families. A family that lives as domestic church nurtures and encourages each of its members to faithfully live out our Baptismal promise of holiness and to share in Christ’s mission. The Creed we pray at Sunday Mass affirms our belief that the Church founded by Christ is “one, holy, catholic and apostolic.” Together these four characteristics or “marks” of the Church express both her nature and mission.
If the nature of the Church is to be one, holy, catholic and apostolic, then shouldn’t the family -- the domestic church -- share these characteristics in its own life, purpose, daily activities and relationships? Pope St. Paul VI wrote that “there should be found in every Christian family the various aspects of the entire Church.”

The Church is One -- The Family is a Unity
The Church is Holy -- The Family is a Community of Faith
The Church is Catholic -- The Family is Welcoming
The Church is Apostolic -- The Family is a Witness to Christ

A Beautiful Practice
Our lives are often so full that we don't have a lot of time to spend on extras. But one thing we can do with our children each night is pray Scripture over them before they go to sleep. It takes only a minute, but our children will look forward to that time each night with God.
We will post Scriptures here. Feel free to print these graphics so you can read from them in quiet moments with your children.
